Veteran Advocacy
VFW offers programs to support veterans of overseas conflicts both in and out of uniform. Two key VFW offices support veterans: National Veterans Service and National Legislative Service.

National Veterans Service (NVS)

NVS helps veterans and their families receive all of their veteran entitlements from VA and states. NVS assists more than 120,000 veterans and their families each year, garnering more than $1 billion in compensation benefits.

You may be eligible for VA benefits if you are:
• a veteran
• a veteran’s dependent
• a surviving spouse, child or parent of a deceased veteran
• an active-duty military service member
• a member of the Reserve or National Guard

If you are eligible for federal benefits, let a professionally trained VFW veteran service officer help you. This free assistance is available to all veterans, including non-VFW-members.

Here are some of the benefits you may have earned:
• Compensation
• Pension
• Health Care
• Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment
• Employment & Training
• Home Loans
• Life Insurance
• Dependency and Indemnity Compensation

National Legislative Service
Our presence on Capitol Hill allows VFW to monitor and lobby Congress for legislative action benefiting a strong national defense, enhanced military benefits and improved quality of life for all veterans.

VFW has played an instrumental role in nearly every piece of veteran legislation passed in the 20th and 21st centuries. Most recently, VFW efforts halted the VA proposal to re-review more than 70,000 diagnosed cases of post-traumatic stress disorder. The review’s sole purpose was to revoke awards for disability compensation under the guise of fraud review.

One of VFW’s most successful legislative accomplishments has been making college education affordable for military service members. Our work helped lead to the signing of the 1944 GI Bill of Rights, the Montgomery GI Bill in 1984, and the new 21st Century GI Bill in 2008.
